Sunday vs Great Ellingham, May

Hales Sunday entertained Great Ellingham at the Green in gloomy, damp conditions and came out on top after Dan Andersen top-scored with 90 and Jaymarr Vale tweaked himself 3 wickets with his cunning finger-spin.

Hales batted first and made a slow start in the sticky conditions. Graham Squire made a decent half-century at the top of the order and, with Dan Andersen, put Ellingham under pressure with some big shots.

With a wet ball and dull conditions, Squire and Andersen took advantage with some brutal batting as Andersen chased down another hundred. Squire fell for 50 and Aaron Jones chipped in with 24 as Hales managed 206 all out as Andersen fell just short, being caught behind for 90.

In reply Great Ellingham never really got going, and wickets fell at regular intervals as Hales managed to restrict them to 137 for 9 in their 40 overs. Despite some awful fielding from Hales, all the bowlers chipped in. Vale was the pick of the bowlers as he cleared up at the end to return figures of 3 for 19, Harmer chipped in with 2 and Todd Jones bowled with great maturity with the new ball again.

Sunday vs Mulbarton

David Harmer scored a stylish century at the green as Hales narrowly lost to Mulbarton on the last ball of the innings in a thrilling encounter.

Harmer and Bezant opened up for Hales and soon got the board rattling with Bezant hitting some fine boundaries. Hales raced to 53 off 10 overs before Bezant perished to a block hole delivery for 17.

The Hales middle order failed, but Harmer remained in control at the other end and scored freely all round the park as he ran the Mulbarton attack ragged.

Vale then entered the game and starred in a 135 run partnership with Harmer to carry Hales towards a huge first-innings total. Vale made an instant impact on the game as he took control of the partnership and displayed some wonderful timing and authentic cricket shots as he raced to an excellent innings of 78.

Harmer eventually fell for a very fine hundred as he was well caught and bowled for 113. Hales reached 248 for 8 from their 40 overs.

In reply Mulbarton made a rapid start, but Jonny Premachandra found his line and length and bowled 10 overs on the bounce, claiming 3 wickets for 37 with his genuine finger spin. Former Hales player Angus Curtis (86) and Mckenzie (77) kept Mulbarton in with a shout as they chased down the target

With the game finely poised, and Bezant and D Andersen keeping Hales in the game with some good bowling, Bezant picked up 4 wickets. However, with a boundary needed off the last ball to win, D Wiepen just managed to clear the short leg side boundary to seal a fine win for Mulbarton.

Sunday A vs Hardingham

Hales Sunday A took a youthful side over to Hardingham, with just two players aged over 14. Hales made an early breakthrough with Jamie Weston removing first-teamer Robbie Fowles off stump for a duck. Harry Baugh also bowled well on his debut. All Hales’ young bowlers bowled solidly, with Skipper Mr Singh giving a workman-like performance in his 10-over stint, leading by example as Hardingham closed on 222 for 6 from their 40 overs.

In reply Hales lost Montagu and Cook early, both coping well with a lively track. Veteran Pete Dye certainly didn’t as he was hit on the head and headed off to A&E to have his head wound checked out. Tom Collier was star performer with the bat, the new signing cracking 32 as Hales young guns returned a respectable 102. Dye returned from hospital to find his car had been hit by the ball too, making it a day to forget, which the bang on his head probably saw to! The Barnard Sports Man of the Match was Tom Collier.
