Great Ellingham 29th July 2007
|
|
Hales Sunday travelled to Great Ellingham to play in what turned out to be a thrilling last-over victory for Hales.
To the surprise of the Hales team, captain Claude Henderson arrived at the airport, having flown in from Hamburg fully fit for the game. With his fitness at its peak, he assumed his all-rounder role within the team.
Claude won the toss and chose to bat first, and rightly so as Hales openers Harmer and R Andersen made a swift start. Andersen made 21 in the first 3 overs, before Harmer had even got of the mark. Harmer eventually got going, and the pair added 46 for the first wicket before Andersen departed for 28.
Harmer and Vale both batted with style and patience until Harmer was well caught for 51 and Jaymarr made a fine 37 to contribute the majority of the team’s runs. Keer-Roe (11 not out) and Henderson (13) took Hales to 173 for 8 from 40 overs.
In the swealtering heat, the Hales side were suffering and to the relief of the team, Kerry Anderson, the club’s new part-time appointed physio provided much needed therapy for the team.
Feeling fresh and invigorated, Claude drank tea and talked his team through his ‘visions’ for the remainder of the game. In an authorative and slightly intimidating miliitary style, Claude laid out his demands for the team to play for.
Hales made a good start with youngsters Weston and Taylor both bowling well, taking a wicket each to get the ball rolling for Hales. However, powerhouse batsman Shaq had other ideas as he belted the ball around like a tracer bullet. Shaq even managed to belt eco-friendly R Andersen for 29 in his first four overs, something that doesn't happen too often. However Shaq came undone by a neat bit of bowling from Cambridge student Ingham as he clean-bowled the dangerman, much to the relief of the Hales team.
D Andersen was outstanding with the ball, and wickets fell with regular occurrence, but runs were still being scored. Great Ellingham kept chipping away biy, despite some superb bowling from Andersen (4 for 18) at the death, found themselves needing 6 runs from the last over with one wicket to spare. Harmer, in his third over, held his nerve to clean-bowl the last man with a swinging yorker, to claim his second wicket and seal the game for Hales.
Another good victory for Hales; credit goes to Claude for his captaincy, to student physio Kerry Anderson and last but not least to Sunday director of cricket Garth Weston, who introduced our new physio member to the club.

Caister 22nd July 2007
|
|
Dan Andersen produced a sparkling performance in a career-best performance of 168 not out as Hales Sunday batted Caister out of the game to win by 146 runs.
Calamity Captain Claude Hendersen again played through the pain barrier, to the amusement of his team mates as he turned up wearing an eye patch and one heavily strapped ankle. This time a step ladder and the loft were to blame.
Claude won the toss and elected to bat on a baking hot afternoon at the Green. Hales opened up with Harmer and Robin Andersen, who were in aggressive mode and set the tone for the game. The pair sent the ball to all parts of the ground until Harmer departed for 47 in the 12th over with the score on 77.
Andersen departed soon after for 32, to leave older brother Dan Andersen and Graham Squire to continue the assualt. A third-wicket partnership of 120 between the pair was the majority of the massive total. Andersen managed to pick a single off the last ball of nearly every over for 20 overs in the partnership. Squire said of his innings, ‘Every time I got strike, I had to play myself in again.’
However, Andersen must have known it was his day because in between the last-ball singles he belted the ball everywhere. He hit gracefully along the floor, on the up over the infield and out of the ground into the fields next door. Andersen’s ‘maxi-bomb’ attacks into the field next door just kept on coming as he lost half a dozen balls on his way to hitting 16 fours and 9 sixes. Boundaries contributed 118 out of the 168 he scored. The Hales innings finished on 298 for 5 from 40 overs.
Caister, who were fielding a strong batting side, went on the attack and for a while were up with the run rate. Brown and Stokes swung the willow, and with it the ball disappeared on a regular basis. Canadian Greg Cameron and Jaymarr Vale were punished severely, and it was the tactical genius of Henderson who introduced the slow bowling to take the pace of the ball.
Jamaican spinner S Claxton bowled an impressive length to lure the batsmen forward only for them to be half way through their shots before the ball arrived. Claxton ripped through the top order, putting a stranglehold on the innings and finished with impressive figures of 4-49 from 10 overs.
Claude then introduced Harmer to the game, who responded well and cleaned up, taking 3 for 7 off six overs to end the Caister innings on 153.
Man of the Match goes to Dan Andersen for an outstanding innings. At just 18 years of age, he is already proving to have the mentality to make big scores. With five centuries in two and a half seasons, the future looks promising for Dan and for Hales, and there is certainly many more to come.

Acle 8th July 2007
|
|
Hales Sunday travelled to Acle to record their fourth victory this season. Hales fielded a strong side, which included wicket-keeper batsman Jaymarr Vale and Claude Henderson, who passed a late fitness test.
Henderson was suffering with two swollen ankles after a skiing accident in his homeland while on a short break. Hales medical expert Chris Bezant said of the injury, ‘In the early stages of injury, Claude was suffering with severe inflammation and two sprained anles, it is a very rare occurence and something I have only seen a couple of times in my medical career.’
However, with both ankles heavily strapped, Claude was able to stand at slip and marshall his troops to the usual high standards. Hales won the toss and batted first in search of a big score in the baking sun.
Jaymarr Vale and Dan Andersen both looked in good touch and scored freely until Andersen was caught hooking to deep square leg for 15. Vale then watched on as three more wickets fell cheaply to leave Hales 64 for 4 of 15 overs.
This bought Dave Harmer to the crease, who, with Vale, calmly took control of the innings. Vale was looking good until he was well bowled for 24 by Rowe to leave Hales five down. With wickets tumbling, Harmer had to farm the strike and occupy the crease to ensure that Hales batted as many of their overs as possible.
This proved a tough task as wickets kept falling, and eventually Harmer was left stranded on 52 not out as Hales were bowled out for 150 in the 36th over.
The Acle innings got underway as they attempted to survive against some incredibly hostile bowling from Mark Roe. Roe was steaming in from an enormous run-up and hitting the deck hard. First-change spinners Ingham (2 for 28) and R Andersen (1 for 20) strangled the Acle innings and ensured they could not match the run rate at any stage.
All the Hales bowlers bowled well, and none of the Acle batsmen managed to accelerate or build any sort of partnership except for Rowe. Rowe scored an agressive 52 not out, but it was not enough as fine bowling at the death from young Aaron Beaumont and Harmer ensured victory for Hales.
Credit also has to go to Chris Bezant for a fine diving catch and good ground work, and also to part-time wicket keeper Fudley Andersen who was very tidy behind the stumps.
This weeks man of the match award was sponsored by Fosters Lager, who have recently installed their taps in the Hales bar. A special thanks to them from all the team for their sponsorship; the man of the match goes to the whole team for a very enthusiastic effort in the field.

Burston 9th June 2007
|
|
Hales Sunday played Burston in the Mid Norfolk League and won by 99 runs.
Hales were at full strength again with wicket keeper-batsman Jaymarr Vale back from his travels in the Far East. Unfortunately for the team, Jaymarr was suffering with "Delhi Belly" and was unable to resume his position in the wicket keepers stance. This meant G Squire was behind the stumps again after a good performance last week.
German overseas sensation Captain Claude prepared his team for the game with a digital cricket video he often used back home called "Tear me a new one" There were many lessons to be learned from this coaching DVD and the team performed well and were well motivated.
Harmer and Robin Andersen opened up against a swinging ball and played well, punishing anything loose. Harmer was hitting hard and straight and Andersen was displaying sublime footwork, often advancing down the track. The pair accelerated well and looked set until Andersen was run out for 37 in the 16th over.
With 80 on the board from the openers the Hales middle order performed well with D Andersen (28) playing very aggresively before trying one big shot too many.
Harmer continued to hit boundaries until he was well caught at deep mid-wicket for 70 in the 23rd over. This left Squire and Henderson at the crease who both took hold of the game. Both players hit huge sixes and played well until Squire departed for 43 and Henderson 47. Parkin also chipped in with a handy 22 to take the innings to a total of 279 from 40 overs
The Burston innings got under way with Mark Roe and Alex Taylor bowling tidy opening spells. It was a test for Party animal Roe's fitness as he bowled 7 overs in one spell. Roe appeared to be sweating out the drinks he consumed the night before which nearly led to a water logged pitch and a rained off game.
C Andersen, Jaymarr Vale and Minns all bowled tidy spells, claiming a wicket each but it was Parkin and Harmer that finished the game of for Hales.
Parkin returned with fine figures of 3-18 from 6 overs and Harmer (2-16) cleaned up the tail to bowl Burston out for 180. J Sage offered some spirited resistance with a fine innings of 62 for the away team.
