Hales Herd vs Beccles Panthers, 19th July 2009

Hales Herd lost to Beccles Panthers by 6 wickets in the Junior Carter Cup. Beccles won the toss and invited Hales to bat, removing Hales danger man Chris Andersen early on. Jonno Wright repaired things with a well-crafted 22, receiving support from George Montagu (26) and Tom Watts, who continued his run of form with 22. Hales posted a modest 104 total.

Beccles made a good start in bat, and even four quick wickets didn't prevent a comfortable win. This gives Beccles a deserved chance of making the last eight after also beating Lowestoft in the group stages.

White Horse Man of the Match was Tom Watts.

U11s vs Sheringham, July 2009

Hales U11s lost to Sheringham U11s by 12 runs in the quarter-finals of the Terry Moore trophy. Skipper Ryan Claxton won the toss and made an early breakthrough after some smart fielding from Sam Ford resulted in a run out. Pressure was applied by tight spells from Charlie Folkard and Alex Jary.

The Hales bowlers kept things controlled and took another wicket when Morgan Rusted’s smart throw resulted in a second run out. Jack Allison then bowled Witbrow in an impressive over costing just 3 runs, and when Alex Jary took a brace in the last over courtesy of a smart stumping from Claxton and a catch from Morgan Rusted, Sheringham closed on 251.

Hales made a good batting start through Cieron Warnes (10) and Jake Turnell (9), losing just one wicket. Sam Ford and Jack Allison were solid, also losing just 1 wicket. Alex Jary (8) kept things going, but wickets lost meant that Ryan Claxton needed to throw caution to the wind in his innings. He gave it a real go, smashing 20, including one huge six, as he got Hales to within 11 runs before a snorter left Hales needing 16 from the final over. Good bowling from Sheringham prevented Claxton's spirited innings from pulling off a victory, with some loose shots proving costly for Hales, who nevertheless gave a good account of themselves in what was a very enjoyable game.

A.J. Ward Man of the Match was Ryan Claxton.

U13 vs Mallards, July 2009

Hales U13s lost to Vauxhall Mallards by 134 runs in the Allan Bridgewater competition. Hales found batting tough against a disciplined attack, with Chris Read (6) and Josh Pitcher (8) the main contributors in a low score of 247. Wickets fell regularly, with Robert Goldsmith the pick of a good attack.

In reply, Mallards scored well, losing only 1 wicket, taken by Joe Durrant’s good bowling. Josh Pitcher and Chris Read were economic but couldn’t prevent Mallards piling on the runs.

The Musker Mcintyre Man of the Match was Josh Pitcher.

U13 vs Blundeston, 2 July 2009

Hales U13s beat Blundeston U13s by 43 runs in the Allan Bridgewater competition. Hales made a fine start with Chris Read continuing his rich vein of form by cracking six boundaries in his 27. He received good support from Jake Rolph (16) and Alex Jary (15) before final pair Ryan Claxton (19) and Josh Pitcher saw Hales post 327 for 5.

In reply, Blundeston lost 2 wickets in Chris Read's opening over but recovered well before Cieron Warnes (2 for 9), Jake Rolph (2 for 5), James Rosewell (1 for 2) and a smart run out ensured a Hales win despite a good knock by Romeshi at the end. Blundeston made 308 for 8, giving Hales the win in a well-spirited game.

Loddon Garden Seed Man of the match was Jake Rolph.

U15 vs Norwich, June 2009

Hales U15s finished their league in excellent form beating Norwich 15s by 75 runs at Postwick. Hales won the toss and, after playing out the first over for a maiden, went on a runfest. George Montagu was top scorer, making 54. He received good support from Mark Minns, who returned to form with a solid 33 as Hales posted a formidable 174 for 4 from their 20 overs.

In reply, opener Josh Knights bowled Johnson first ball with a snorter, but then Yaxley and Hanson took control. The introduction of Harry Baugh and Lewis White for Hales stopped the flow and wickets fell as Hales began to control the game. Two wickets for Robbie Craigs and a wicket for Alfie Kaye ended Norwich's innings on 99 in the 20th over.

A.J. Ward Man of the Match was George Montagu.

U11 vs Topcroft, 28th June 2009

Hales U11s closed their U11 group stages with an emphatic 121-run win over neighbours Topcroft in the Terry Moore trophy. Skipper Ryan Claxton asked Topcroft to bat and made early inroads courtesy of some tidy bowling. Cieron Warnes (4 for 5) and Alex Jary (4 for 10) were the top performers, with good support from Chris Read (2 for 13) and all other bowlers keeping Topcroft's batsmen on the back foot. Topcroft finished on 251 for 11 to give a net score of 196.

Ryan Claxton and Morgan Rusted gave Hales a solid start in batting. Charlie Follkard (8), Alex Jary (9) and Sam Ford with his best score pushed things along before Charlie Duffield and Chris Read scored well. Read, up against the impressive Patterson, still dominated, cracking five boundaries in another quality knock of 23. Hales finished on 322 for 1, giving a net score of 317 to finish the group stages with a record of six wins from seven games and a very strong chance of making it through to the last eight of the completion.

M & H Man of the Match was Cieron Warnes.

Beccles & Bungay Roll of Honour nominations: Cieron Warnes 4 for 5, Alex Jary 4 for 10

U11s vs Brooke, 25th June 2009

Hales U11s beat Brooke U11s by 74 runs in the Terry Moore Trophy. Hales batted first and made a good start through Ryan Claxton (16) and Alex Jary (9), who were supported by their partners before Chris Read again showed his class, scoring 38 excellent runs, particularly through the off side. With no wickets lost, Hales closed on 315.

In reply, Brooke showed great application, with Matt Cooke (10) and Rocco (9) the main scorers. However, Chris Read (3 for 13) and Alex Jary, Morgan Rusted, Oscar Skelton and Jake Turrell, with a wicket apiece, ensured that Brooke finished on 241. Two catches were taken by Jake Turrell, who continues to do well since having been introduced via the Chance 2 Shine programme. Skipper Claxton marshalled his troops well, giving Hales five wins from six in the competition.

Norwich Kitchens Man of the Match was Chris Read.

U15 vs Lowestoft, 24th June 2009

Hales U15s travelled to leaders Lowestoft U15s and lost by 9 wickets. Hales lost Mark Minns second ball when he received an unusually low ball on the Denes pitch. Josh Knights had made 8 before dragging on, and when Jamie Weston, Alfie Kaye and Tom Watts perished, a small total looked likely. Jack Cook, however, had other ideas as he single-handedly took on the Lowestoft attack, making an impressive 59 not out and batting throughout the innings. Good support from Rolph and White saw Hales pass the 100 mark.

In reply, Hales removed Mcavoy courtesy of a smart catch off the bowling of White. Joe Larter was looking in great nick, producing a string of textbook shots as Hales bowlers struggled to test him. He made 60 not out and received support from Hebditch, who made a more fortunate 20 to see Lowestoft pass their target in the 19th over. Harry Baugh was the pick of the Hales attack, but Lowestoft ended up deserving winners of the group and with a good chance to make the final.

Musker Macintyre Man of the Match was Jack Cook.

U13s vs Acle, 23rd June 2009

Hales U13 beat Acle U13 by 24 runs in the Allan Bridgewater Trophy. Skipper Josh Pitcher won the toss and elected to bat. Chris Read got Hales off to a perfect start, scoring 23 with good support from Cieron Warnes as they added 29 from their four overs. Ryan Claxton and Sam Ford steadily added to the score, with Claxton being bowled by Rivers. Jake Rolph went on the assault from the onset, smashing 29, with James Kershaw supporting by adding 36. This left Josh Pitcher and James Rosewell to bat sensibly to close on an impressive 303 for 1.

Acle were pegged backed by some tight bowling but gradually increased the tempo before a smart run-out from Read and a wicket from Warnes ensured that Hales went into the last four overs with a nice cushion. Acle hit out, but Hales were winners by 24 runs.

Faber Roofing Man of the Match was Jake Rolph.

U11 vs Acle, June 2009

Hales Under-11s produced another excellent display to beat Acle by 23 runs. Skipper Chris Read elected to bat and justified that decision with an elegant 23. He received good support from Oscar Skelton who made 12 and Alex Jary (9), with Sam Ford batting well to deny county player Larner. Hales closed on a good 252 net.

In reply, an early double-breakthrough from Alex Jary gave Hales the edge, with 2 for Charlie Folkard and Jake Turrell, who had an impressive debut as well as taking a quality catch. Chris Read completed a fine game, taking 4 for 10, meaning that Hales bagged 12 wickets in total. Despite Larner’s big-hitting 32, Hales deservedly ran out as winners by 23 runs to give them a chance of making the quarter finals.

Loddon Garden and Seed Centre Man of the Match was Chris Read, also nominated for the Beccles & Bungay roll of honour for his score of 4 for 10.

U15s vs Beccles, 19th June 2009

Hales U15s beat Beccles U15s by 8 wickets in the Andy Seeley trophy. Beccles won the toss and came up against good opening spells from Josh Knights (1 for 11) and Jamie Weston (1 for 7). These two were backed up by Lewis White (2 for 17), Isaac Rolph (2 for 13) and Aaron Beaumont (2 for 5) as Beccles made a modest 56. J. Rodwell was top-scorer for Beccles, batting well for his 15.

In reply, George Montagu got Hales off to a lively start. Minns and Cook were then both run out before Josh Knights (15) and Montagu (29 n.o.) saw Hales home in the 8th over.

The White Horse Man of the Match was Josh Knights.

U11s vs Mallards, 18th June 2009

Hales U11s beat previously unbeaten leaders Vauxhall Mallards by 20 runs in the Terry Moore trophy. Hales got of to a splendid start as Chris Read was in awesome form, cracking 23, including one of the best off-drives you will ever see. He was well backed up by Ryan Claxton (13), Charlie Duffield (7) and Sam Ford (6) as Hales posted an impressive total of 275 for 3.

In reply, Callum White (15) got Mallards off well, but tight bowling kept Hales in front. Chris Read (3 for 8), Charlie Duffield (1 for 7) and a run-out saw Hales home by 20 runs, with 7-year-old Felix Skelton standing in and fielding superbly in his first game.

The Musker Mcintyre Man of the Match was Chris Read.

U13s vs Norwich, June 2009

Hales U13s beat Norwich U13s by 12 runs in a thoroughly entertaining game. Hales made a good start through Chris Read (10) and Cieron Warnes (5). Ryan Claxton (14), James Rosewell (5) and Jake Rolph helped to push Hales to 274 for 5, a decent score, but with three wickets lost due to some loose shots.

In reply, Norwich made a good start and were in command 15 run ahead with three overs to go before Cieron Warnes turned the game by taking two wickets in one over, to finish with figures of 3 for 9. A tight over from Chris Read left Hales just 2 behind going into the last over. Second-ball quick thinking by James Kershaw behind the stumps gained a stumping, and when Jake Rolph bowled Brown with the next ball, Hales snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Barnard Sports Man of the Match was Cieron Warnes.

county news

Hales Cricket player Chris Read took a starring role in Norfolk Under-11s 90-run win against Lincolnshire in May. Read top-scored with 83 in Norfolk's 202 for 4 total, his top score for the county. Lincolnshire were all out for 112.

Hales manager of Youth Cricket Pete Dye was delighted but not surprised: ‘Chris is an outstanding player who trains and works hard. It’s a massive achievement to score so well at county level, and I’m sure this will be the first of many big scores for him.’

U15 vs Vauxhall Mallards, June 2009

Hales U15s bowed out of the U15 national competition, losing to a very strong Vauxhall Mallards side by 60 runs.

Hales won the toss and made early breakthroughs when Jamie Weston removed county players Barker for 5 and Plater without score. Stone controlled the innings before being caught and bowled by White for a super 49, and Brown gave good support as Mallards posted 129 for 4.

In reply, George Montagu stood up to the lively Mallards attack, cracking a fine 33, but he received little support as Hales finished on 67.

Norwich Kitchen Centre Man of the Match was George Montagu.

U15 vs Diss, 27th May 2009

Hales U15s reached the semi-finals of the ECB U15 Competition, beating Diss thanks to a full monty performance from Aaron Beaumont. He took 4 for 20 and then followed that with a match-winning 36 not out, as he put the Diss bowlers to the sword to see Hales home with 11 balls to spare.

Diss got off to a good start, aided by some woeful attempts at catching, as Spinks (44) and Willeman (27) took full advantage before Diss lost their first wicket on 75 in the 14th over, when Alfie Kaye showed the way off Beaumont’s bowling. This saw Hales pull the game back, with Beaumont taking 3 more to finish with fine figures of 4 for 20, as Diss faltered to a close on 105 for 4 when a larger score had looked likely.

In reply, George Montagu got Hales off to a flyer with a typically pugnacious 27. Mark Minns (13) and Josh Knight (13) kept Hales moving before Beaumont took the game away from Diss ,with a fine array of shots in his unbeaten 36. This saw Hales through to the semi-final stage against Vauxhall Mallards.

Manager Pete Dye was delighted for Beaumont: ‘Aaron has always worked and developed his game, and to see him perform to such quality is particularly pleasing. The reward tonight is well deserved for the dedication he has shown over the 2 years he has been with the club.’

The A.J. Ward Man of the Match was Aaron Beaumont.

U15s vs Topcroft, 20th May 2009

Hales U15s lost to Topcroft U15s by 6 wickets in the Andy Seeley trophy. Hales made a steady start, with good knocks from George Montagu (17) and Mark Minns (14) putting on 33 before Montagu was caught in the 7th over. Jack Cook added 13 and Aaron Beaumont 12, but it was skipper Jamie Weston who caught the eye, cracking three boundaries in a stylish 26 n.o. Hales closed on 98 for 4 from their 20 overs, which was a decent score considering the well-disciplined bowling they faced.

In reply, Jack Baldwin led the way with a excellent 38. He received good support from Charlie Mattocks (26 n.o.) and T. Graham (18 n.o.) as Topcroft passed Hales’ total in the 18th over. Isaac Rolph was the pick of the Hales bowlers with his 4 overs costing just 8 runs, but too many loose deliveries meant that Topcroft won with 10 balls to spare.

Musker McIntyre Man of the Match was Isaac Rolph.

U13s vs Lowestoft, 19th May 2009

Hales U13s lost to a very strong Lowestoft side, who scored freely throughout their innings. Chris Read, Alex Jary and Jamie Steer were Hales’ most economical bowlers but couldn’t prevent Lowestoft from posting a mammoth total of 327. Josh Pitcher and Alex Jary took the wickets for Hales.

In reply, Chris Read made a lively 10, and Alex Jary continued his fine run of form with 12, but wickets tumbled at regular intervals to leave Hales well adrift of Lowestoft's total.

Faber Roofing Man of the Match was Alex Jary.

U13s vs Kirkley, 17th May 2009

Hales U13s beat Kirkley by 14 runs. Hales batted well, with Jake Rolph (19) and Chris Read (14) leading the way and all others showing control as Hales posted an impressive 267.

In reply, Kirkley made a steady start but were restricted by a good display of bowling. Then D. Howes cracked a whirlwind 36 to see Hales suddenly in danger of losing the match. Alex Jary then bowled Jones to give Hales the advantage and, with another wicket from Joe Durrant, saw Hales secure the win by 14, sending the large contingent of Hales supporters home happy.

The Chedgrave White Horse Man of the Match was Jake Rolph.

U15s vs Blundeston, 15th May 2009

Hales U15s made an impressive start to their season, beating Blundeston by 17 runs at the Green. George Montagu and Mark Minns made an excellent start, reaching 34 before Minns was out for 9. Montagu was in fine form and continued to dominate the bowling, receiving excellent support from Tom Watts (19). Montagu was finally run out for 33, an excellent knock. Aaron Beaumont smashed 16 from 6 balls to see Hales close on 116 for 7.

In response, Gooch (29) and Davies (31) gave Blundeston a solid base, but Hales skipper Jamie Weston marshalled his troops well, with Blundeston always behind the rate needed. Josh Knights (3 for 11) and Lewis White caused problems, with Isaac Rolph, Jamie Weston and George Montagu giving nothing away as Hales won by 17 runs.

The A.J. Ward Butchers Man of the Match was George Montagu.

U11s vs Bungay, 13th May 2009

Hales U11 and Bungay U11 shared in a thoroughly entertaining game in the Terry Moore trophy. Hales may have won on the last ball, but both teams were winners in the way the game was played.

Hales bowling honours went to Charlie Folkard, who produced amazing figures of 3-2-3-5, completing his first five-wicket hall in only his third hard ball match. Bungay finished on 240 after the 7 wickets were deducted.

In reply, skipper Ryan Claxton cracked 14 to see the side off to a good start, and when Alex Jary (14) and Morgan Rusted (8) had batted, Hales looks odds on to win. Fair play though to Bungay, who staged a strong fightback, taking wickets and stopping the flow of runs to leave Hales just 4 ahead going into the last over.

Sam Ford, who had batted superbly, was bowled, leaving Hales trailing with three balls left. After two dot balls, 2 runs were needed from the final ball, and it was fitting that Man of the Match Charlie Folkard cracked a stunning on drive to see Hales home by 3 runs.

New players Charlie Duffield, Jack Allison and Oscar Skelton all did well, but Charlie Folkard’s performance with the ball was the difference in a game that, despite the gloomy weather, left everyone beaming to have watched such a good game of cricket on the part of both sides.

U13 v Fakenham, Spirit of Cricket Cup

Hales U13 made a quick exit from the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cup, losing by 41 runs to a strong Fakenham side containing seven county players. Fakenham scored freely as they posted a formidable 122, but all the Hales bowlers stuck at their task, with Chris Read and Jake Rolph the pick of the attack.

In reply Hales lost skipper Josh Pitcher early on, but Chris Read showed his quality, making 30 before his enforced retirement, as dictated by the rules. He received good support from Alex Jary, who finished unbeaten on 12, standing up well against some fast, accurate bowling. Hales finished on 81 for the loss of 6 wickets.

Manager Pete Dye was pleased with the way his side stood up. ‘We were up against a very good side who will go a long way in this competition, but our team containing seven U11 players can only take the credit for standing up in the way they did to some very strong bowlers’’
