Hales Herd vs Swardeston, July

Swardeston beat Hales by 8 wickets at Hales. Swardeston won the toss and asked Hales to bat first. Hales had a disastrous start when a mix-up left Mark Minns stranded without facing a ball. Rob Andersen soon got things moving before he miscued to point, to end with an elegant 17. In-form Todd Jones was again top batter, cracking six boundaries in his excellent 36. He received good support from Josh Knights (24) and Jamie Weston (16 not out), as a young Hales side posted 125 for 9.

In reply Swardeston made a lively start and had reached 58 before Andersen trapped Martin in front for 19. Josh Knights removed Parry for 34, but Shearing (34) and Reynolds (23) saw Swardeston cruise to victory in the 21st over. The game was played in an excellent spirit, with the wicket-making bowlers toil for any reward.

The CJ Ball Motorcycles Man of the Match was Todd Jones, in the form of his life.

Quarter-finals - Sheringham Sabres

Hales Herd lost to Sheringham Sabres in the quarter-finals of the Junior Carter Cup, but it was a game to remember for Rob Andersen, who smashed his way to a faultless century. Sheringham chose to bat and made a strong start, as Hales’ makeshift bowling attack struggled to find their line. Skipper Rob Andersen was the exception, with a fine return of 2 for 7 from his 7 overs. Lewis White finished the innings with a hat trick, courtesy of two smart stumpings from Chris Andersen as he returned figures of 4 for 45 from 7. Hales had unfortunately bowled many wides, which contributed to the Sabres’ 219 for 9 total.

In reply, Hales lost three early wickets before Jack Cook and Rob Andersen took the game to Sheringham. Jack Cook produced his best batting to date, making a solid 18, but it was Rob Andersen who thrilled the crowd. He played shots to all parts of the ground, with the Sheringham bowlers helpless to prevent him; his amazing knock of 101 contained 16 fours and 1 six, coming off just 17 overs.

Hales made 176 from just 27 overs but paid the price for their below-par bowling and fielding display. However, those who witnessed Andersen’s century can consider themselves privileged to have witnessed undoubtedly one of the finest innings scored this or any other season.

Beccles & Bungay Roll of Honour nominations: Rob Andersen 101, Lewis White 4 for 45

Lowestoft

Holders Hales Herd reached the quarter finals of the Junior Carter Cup after a nail-bitting 1-wicket win over Lowestoft Lions at the Denes Oval. The Lions batted first and were going nicely on 82 before Hales turned the screw and kept the run rate down. Rob Andersen (2 for 10 from 6) and Matty Parkin (0 for 11 from 6) showed their pedigree, with 13-year-olds Jamie Weston (2 for 34) and Josh Knights (2 for 24), as well as spinner James Ingham (1 for 17 from 6), restricting the Lions when a much better score looked likely. Hales resisted the opportunity to bring in county player Chris Andersen, whose county game had fallen to the weather, and when Rob Andersen went for 2, the Lions score of 138 looked a long way away. Sam Watts led the fight back with a spirited 22, but at 54 for 5, the score looked too big to challenge. Todd Jones and James Ingham had other ideas though, adding a match-winning 58  in 12 overs before Jones was out for a well-crafted 22. James Ingham went for a stylish 31, giving Lowestoft the scent of victory, but young guns Knights,Weston and Jack Cook gave Jonno Wright the support he needed, with Cook scoring the winning run in the 35th over with 1 wicket spare, and taking Hales Herd into the quarter finals. The strength and depth of the side won a very hard-earned victory to send the large number of Herd supporters home happy.

Vauxhall Mallards

Hales Herd beat Vauxhall Mallards by 90 runs in the Junior Carter Cup on 3rd June. Hales were asked to bat first and lost Chris Ayre, Sam Watts and Todd Jones early on to Stone. Rob Andersen joined his brother Chris and got Hales moving, before Chris Andersen fell with the score on 40. Rob Andersen was then joined by Matt Parkin, which was the signal for the Herd to cut loose. These two added 91 in just 9 overs before Parkin was out for a well-crafted 24. Rob Andersen was in full flight, scoring at will, with in-form Josh Knights taking over where Parkin had left off. Andersen  had made an outsanding 65 when a rush of blood saw him run himself out when he had looked at ease against anything  Mallards had to offer. Knights caried it on, making an excellent unbeaten 25 as Hales Herd were all out for 175 in just 25 overs, Ollie Stone impressive taking 5 for 13 from his spell.

In reply 13-year-old Jamie Weston took a wicket first ball, courtesy of a smart catch by his brother Parkin. Weston then followed that with two more wickets in a stunning 3 for 11 spell, with fellow opener Jones picking up another to leave Mallards in trouble at 29 for 4. Rob Andersen removed Stone for 7, before some resistence from Quinton and Jones saw Mallards creep to 80. Jono Wright wrapped up proceedings with a three-wicket burst to leave Mallards all out for 85. This was an  good performance by the Herd, who – like Mallards -  had several key players missing. Barnard Sports Man of the Match was Rob Andersen.
