Colts vs Gt Witchingham, 20th June 2009

Hales Colts continued their recent run of form by collecting their third successive win to make it five wins from seven attempts this season. Skipper Chris Ayre won the toss and elected to bat.

Opener Pete Dye was in cracking form, smashing boundaries from the outset, but early wickets saw Hales on 46 for 5 from just eight overs, as too many of the team had been watching the 20/20 cricket over the previous few weeks. Dye then anchored the innings, with Ben Coleman playing a cameo innings of 31 using his vintage willow. Dye was finally beaten by Horse for 56, and Isaac Rolph (6) saw Hales to 129 in the 32nd over.

In reply, Luke Thomas bowled with real fire, and after a brief shower he made the batsmen jump around. Thomas received great support from Alex Taylor, but at 72 for 3 Witchingham were well set. Enter Chris Read: the 11-year-old dismissed the opener followed by three others, all bowled in a superb spell of 4 for 13.

At the other end, Alfie Kaye bowled with great flight and turn. He backed Read with 3 for 11 as Witchingham capitulated, losing their last 8 wickets for 39 runs to give the Colts another 24 points to add to their already impressive total.

Norwich Kitchens Man of the Match was Chris Read.

Hales Colts vs Old Buckenham, 30th May 2009

Hales Colts visited unbeaten league leaders Old Buckenham C and came away with an impressive win by 94 runs. Two outstanding batting performances from Chris Ayre (81) and Matt Parkin (61) saw the Colts rack up a record 251 for 5.

Skipper Ayre won the toss and chose to bat. Openers George Montagu and Parkin had to endure a lively start, and with the new ball moving around, they took the score to 36 before Montagu was bowled for 12. Josh Knights and Parkin continued to increase the run rate, before Knights was bowled for a lively 21. Skipper Ayre joined Parkin, who was accumulating well, and Ayre then played the innings of his life, cracking boundaries to all parts of the ground. Parkin gave him maximum strike before being caught for a well-crafted 61 after the pair had put on 107 from just 14 overs.

Brian Read joined Ayre as these two saw Hales well past 200 before Ayre was LBW for an outstanding 81 coming off 19 overs that contained 13 fours. Read made 31 and was joined by his son Chris, who played a cheeky cut to bring up the 250, a fitting end to such a fine display of batting.

In the field, Hales made an early breakthrough when Alex Taylor bowled Lincoln for 5, and when Parkin took a stunning low diving catch to dismiss Bickel off the bowling of Knights, the Colts’ control of the game started. Parkin (2 for 18) and Coleman (2 for 17) were the most successful. A wicket apiece went to Taylor, Montagu, Knights and Chris Read, who took 1 for 21 from his 8 overs, superb bowling for an 11-year-old.

In the last over, Pete Dye bagged a catch off Parkin to see Old Buckenham finish on 157 for 8, and to gain another point to give the Colts 25 points and three wins from five so far this season.

Hales Colts vs Acle B, 16th May 2009

Hales Colts visited the picturesque village of South Walsham after a mystery tour of Norfolk courtesy of Pete Dye's shortcut, which saw the team back in Norwich at one point! Once on the pitch, Josh Knights made two early breakthroughs, but then it was tough going when Brown and Newman both hit centuries for Acle as they posted 262 for 3. Chris Read took the other wicket in his fine spell of 8 overs. Late stand-in Josh Pitcher also bowled well as Hales were put to the sword in the field.

In reply, Alfie Kaye top-scored with a controlled 17, receiving support from Pete Dye (14), Chris Ayre (12) and Chris Read (9), who batted superbly as Hales made 83 before being bowled out in the 29th over.

Skipper Chris Ayre remained upbeat: ‘Colts cricket is all about development, and 11-year-old Chris Read showed today just what a quality player he will become.’

The Garmin Sat Nav Man of the Match was Chris Read.

Hales Colts vs Martham, 9th May

Hales Colts notched up an impressive win by 32 runs against Martham A at the Green on Saturday. Hales batted first and made a good start, with Todd Jones leading the innings well with 33. Skipper Chris Ayre (13), Isaac Rolph (10 n.o.) and J. Ubba (9) made valuable contributions. However, it was Jamie Weston (46 n.o.) and Alfie Kaye (32) who produced the match-winning partnership, Both played an array of fine shots as they put on 54 for the sixth wicket as the Colts made an excellent 178 for 6 from their 45 overs.

Wizz had to be replaced due to injury by Ayre, who bagged a fine catch as Hales sensed victory. This came with 4 overs to spare and gave a wonderful 25 points to the Hales young guns.

Skipper Ayre was delighted with his team’s performance: ‘Jamie Weston and Alfie Kaye were awesome today. What is pleasing is that this win was gained by all U18s, which shows the quality we have despite our inexperience.’

The www.Swiss.com Man of the Match was Jamie Weston, and special thanks go to Karen Knights for providing a banquet for both sides during the interval.
