Hales A vs Sprowston, 27th June 2009

Hales A travelled to an unbeaten Sprowston in Norfolk League division 4 and were put into bat with thundery clouds above.

It was obviously a good toss to win as Hales were soon struggling on 22 for 4. George Montagu and Matt Parkin then carried the innings score to 37 for 5, but with the next four wickets  falling in only 1.3 overs, Hales failed to make the batting point, falling just short on 39 all out.

Hales did, however, make one breakthrough at least, but it could have been more, with the pace of Josh Knights' bowling proving too hot for his own slips as well as the opposition batsmen.

The George Bircham Man of the Match was George Montagu.

Hales A vs Drayton, 13th June 2009

Hales A lost to Drayton A by 7 wickets in Norfolk League division 4. Hales won the toss and made a steady start through skipper Paul Bassingthwaighte and Milton Lindsay. Bassingthwaighte made a well-worked 22, falling in the 14th over with the score on 40. Lindsay continued to be the rock of the innings, making a solid 33 and being given support from Andy Knights (22 n.o.), Jack Cook (13) and Pete Dye (12). Hales closed on 138 with several overs still left in their innings.

In reply, Josh Knights and Jamie Weston produced excellent opening spells, with Knights bowling with real pace. These two picked up a wicket apiece, and at 6 for 2 Hales were right on top. Good batting from then on saw Drayton win by 3 wickets, but Hales’ young attack kept working; with more application with the bat, that elusive win is surely not far away for a fast-improving side.

Faber Roofing Man of the Match was Milton Lindsay .

Hales A vs Martham, June 2009

Hales A team produced a much improved performance in defeat that will see them well for the rest of the season.

After the meagre 45 last week, skipper Paul Bassingthwaighte asked Martham to bat. Openers Jamie Weston and Lewis White bowled well against experienced batsmen who, on a good track, were always in control. Matt Parkin and Aaron Beaumont also bowled well and produced chances that unfortunately went down.

Fairbrother had passed his century, and the score was on 212 before Pete Dye caught Punchard for 78 off the bowling of Rob Mattocks. Sayer cracked a quickfire 37 before Mattocks removed him and Dunn to close the innings on 268 for 3, with Mattocks finishing on 3 for 38.

In reply, Parkin (14) and Lindsay (15) gave a steady start before Jack Cook and Pete Dye put on an impressive 105 for the third wicket. Fifteen-year-old Cook was in scintillating form, playing a textbook innings and cracking 11 boundaries as he completed his maiden half-century. The experienced Dye started slowly before scoring freely as Hales produced their best batting of the season so far.

Cook was finally out for an outstanding 72 in the 43rd over. Dye then released a flurry of boundaries to finish on 59 n.o. as he and Bassingthwaighte added 30 inside three overs as they finished on 198 for 3. This should be a turning point in a season where development has been excellent without the results to match.

The Loddon Garden and Seed Centre Man of Match was Jack Cook.

Hales A v Winterton, 3rd May

Hales A travelled to Winterton on Saturday in Norfolk League division 4 and were put into bat after losing the toss. The Hales batsmen made slow work of scoring runs, but with the occasional boundary the score soon started to tick along. Mark Minns was unlucky to be given out, and Specsavers may well get some more business before Saturday! Paul Bassingthwaighte was eventually caught at third man for a dogged 47, with a late flourish from 14-year-old Harry Baugh of 8 n.o. The visitors finished on 101 all out.

Alex Taylor took the first wicket of the Winterton innings thanks to a great catch from Tom Watts. Lewis White finished his first spell with a double-wicket maiden, to leave the home team on 32 for 3. Then left-arm spinner Matthew Plummer came into the attack and took a wicket in each of his first three overs in a display of unreadable spin bowling that left the batsmen bamboozled. With the result teetering, the visitors felt aggrieved as a series of unsuccessful LBW appeals were turned down. The hosts passed their target with 3 wickets to spare.
